IN THE NEWS: NH Rail Trails Coalition October 26 Conference

Months of thoughtful preparation led to an exciting day of discussion on topics of concern to active rail trail users and organizations:

  • Background of major accomplishments since 2005: over 48 miles of new trail completed on just the Northern Rail Trail.
  • View from state officials in DOT and Trails Bureau: no dedicated funding for bike/ped rail trails.
  • Rails to Trails Conservancy supports multiple efforts to connect segments within individual trails: Granite State Rail Trail; Cross NH Adventure Trail; Bridges across Connecticut River linking New Hampshire to Massachusetts & Vermont.
  • Actions of the Legislature: multiple bills concerning OHRV issues.
  • Permitted uses of e-bikes on rail trails.
  • Protecting local landowners from the ravages of ATVs.
  • Harrisville’s successes in connecting isolated stretches of the Manchester & Keene line using donated bridges, skills, and financial support.
  • Efforts to acquire abandoned railroad corridors in the Hamptons and Concord.
  • Possible routing of the Granite State Rail Trail between Concord and Manchester using an on-road detour west of the Merrimack River.
  • Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail use of rail trails and lightly traveled roads is getting a lot of attention.
  • Challenges in maintaining a hard-pack trail.
  • Launch of our new NH Rail Trails Coalition web site : https://nhrtc.org
  • There were 44 attendees. Feedback was quite positive on the value of the presentations.
