WHAT ARE THE TRAIL SURFACES LIKE?  The trail surface type (paved or gravel) may vary even along a single rail trail. Of the 40+ rail trails listed below, 14 are “fully paved” (asphalt) end-to-end, and are noted below with “Asphalt paved“.  The majority of the rest of the trails are a compact gravel surface. For more details on the surface material or condition of a particular trail, click on the link for that trail, where available.
