Others experience increased use when covered by snow, so snowmobile clubs can groom and ride on them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In spring-summer-fall many Active Trail Users (<b>ATU<\/b>s) might avoid trails that allow motorized users due to noise, dust and traffic, but in winter ATUs can\u00a0 coexist with snowmobiles much more readily.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, I found that the grooming for snowmobiles made for a much easier and more enjoyable walk in February. I\u2019ll try to show you why in this article, and encourage you to use some of the groomed trails near you for cross-country skiing, walking, snowshoeing, or fat-tire biking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For trails near you, explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/\">AllTrails.com<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traillink.com\/\">traillink.com<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/nhrtc.org\/trail-spotting\/\">trailspotting.com<\/a> linked on the NHRTC website.<\/p>\n<p>My walk was on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belmontnh.org\/Pages\/Index\/91147\/river-walk-rail-spur-trail\">Belmont Village Spur Rail Trail<\/a>, which starts from a parking lot at 13 Depot St. Belmont, NH. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It is built on the railbed of the Belmont Village Spur Line from the Concord and Montreal Railroad, abandoned in 1934. I encountered several walkers who were out enjoying the trail<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Further on, where the snowmobiles had groomed the trail, the footing was firm and made for easy going, so I could look up and enjoy the scenery as I walked the trail (see Figure 4).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>During my walk I encountered a group of three snowmobiles and was struck by how quiet they were compared to the OHRVs I\u2019ve encountered during summer walks and bike rides on the few rail trails that allow them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In looking through the New Hampshire Statutes, I found that OHRVs are limited to 96dB, while snowmobiles are restricted to less than 82db, which is consistent with what I experienced.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Note that because of the log scale of dB, 96dB is experienced as more than 10 times louder than 82dB! <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No wonder it is generally agreed that snowmobiles coexist more easily with ATUs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One way to work with the snowmobile clubs is to join one and contribute to the effort to groom the trails so they can be used more easily by walkers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, fat-tire bikers and walkers. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nhsa.com\/nh-snowmobile-clubs\/\">https:\/\/nhsa.com\/nh-snowmobile-clubs\/<\/a> (if you do join or otherwise contribute to one of the snowmobiles clubs &#8211; email info@nhrtc.org so NHRTC can keep track of ATU contributions to our beautiful rail trails.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5783\" style=\"width: 1864px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5783\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5783\" src=\"https:\/\/nhrtc.org\/nhrtc-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-05-at-4.13.23-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1854\" height=\"1396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nhrtc.org\/nhrtc-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-05-at-4.13.23-PM.png 1854w, https:\/\/nhrtc.org\/nhrtc-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-05-at-4.13.23-PM-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/nhrtc.org\/nhrtc-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-05-at-4.13.23-PM-1024x771.png 1024w, https:\/\/nhrtc.org\/nhrtc-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-05-at-4.13.23-PM-768x578.png 768w, https:\/\/nhrtc.org\/nhrtc-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-05-at-4.13.23-PM-1536x1157.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1854px) 100vw, 1854px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 4.
